How is cancer linked to mitosis?

One of the stages of mitosis (the process of cell division) tells the cells to stop dividing when the cells grow too close. Cancer cells, however, do not undergo this checkpoint of mitosis; this important part of mitosis doesn't apply to them and therefore their growth is unlimited.
